Celebrating Our Story 17 Years Later

On April 3rd of 2009, we published our first indie book without any expectations. We simply wanted to share a story. Over time, that one book led to another, and then another, until eventually we found ourselves building what is now 4 Oak Books. It’s been a slow, steady, and simple kind of growth. We followed our curiosity, writing and illustrating stories.

Today, we’re taking a moment to look back at where it all started.

Where Our Name Comes From

The name 4 Oak Books comes from a real oak tree in the woods. It’s an old, overgrown tree shaped like the number 4. Years before (maybe centuries ago), someone snapped a branch to mark a direction or trail, and the tree grew around that break. Over time, it formed a natural “4” in its silhouette.

Trail marker trees are natural signposts. Many Native American tribes bent young saplings so they would grow in specific directions, pointing the way toward trails, water, or important places. Early travelers and settlers used them too. They looked different depending on the region, but the idea was to form living guideposts in the landscape.

Paths are marked in all kinds of ways, sometimes intentionally and sometimes by chance. When it came time to choose a name, this tree felt like the right one to carry forward.

How 4 Oak Books Took Root

Our publishing journey began with one indie release and the simple belief that stories deserve a place to land, even if they don’t fit neatly into traditional categories. Over the years, that idea has grown into a small creative circle of authors and illustrators.

A Growing Collection of Stories

From the cozy‑paranormal feel of Lost Lake to the fantasy world of Cintarzia to the vivid, sci‑fi edge of Jade and Crim, our catalog has slowly expanded over the years. We’ve added children’s books, non-fiction, serials, audiobooks, and seasonal collections along the way. No matter the genre, our goal has stayed simple: to write and publish stories we care about.

Why Indie Publishing Works for Us

Indie publishing has given us the freedom to experiment, to learn as we go, and to connect directly with readers. It’s not always easy, but it’s meaningful. We get to follow our ideas wherever they lead, and we’re grateful for that.

Marking 17 Years

This anniversary isn’t about numbers or milestones. It’s more of a quiet acknowledgment of everyone who has been part of this journey — readers, authors, friends, and anyone who has picked up one of our books or shared a kind word along the way. Every bit of support has mattered.

Looking Ahead

We’re continuing to write, to build worlds, and to explore new ideas. There are more stories coming — in fantasy, sci‑fi, paranormal, and beyond — along with expansions to the worlds we’ve already created. We’re excited to keep going, one book at a time.

Thank You

Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or found us somewhere along the way, thank you. Your interest and encouragement have helped shape who we are.

Here’s to whatever comes next.
